I was reading alot of posts on here even from some people who claim to be "medical students" that are spreading incorrect information about this disease. Having contracted hep c through a blood transfusion I have done alot of research and here is some. I hope this helps: Transmission Several activities and practices were initially identified as potential sources of exposure to the hepatitis C virus. More recent studies question this route of transmission. Currently it is felt to be a means of rare transmission of hepatitis C infection. Injection drug use Those who currently use or have used drug injection as their delivery route for illicit drugs are at increased risk for getting hepatitis C because they may be sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia (includes cookers, cotton, spoons, water, etc.), which may be contaminated with HCV-infected blood. An estimated 60% to 80% of intravenous recreational drug users in the United States have been infected with HCV.[11] Harm reduction strategies are encouraged in many countries to reduce the spread of hepatitis C, through education, provision of clean needles and syringes, and safer injecting techniques. For reasons that are not clear transmission by this route currently appears to be declining in the US. Drug use by nasal inhalation (Drugs that are "snorted") Transmission of HCV is possible through the nasal inhalation (insuffulation) of drugs when straws (containing even trace amounts of mucus and blood) are shared among users.[12] Blood products Blood transfusion, blood products, or organ transplantation prior to implementation of HCV screening (in the U.S., this would refer to procedures prior to 1992) is a decreasing risk factor for hepatitis C. The virus was first isolated in 1989 and reliable tests to screen for the virus were not available until 1992. Therefore, those who received blood or blood products prior to the implementation of screening the blood supply for HCV may have been exposed to the virus. Blood products include clotting factors (taken by hemophiliacs), immunoglobulin, Rhogam, platelets, and plasma. In 2001, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the risk of HCV infection from a unit of transfused blood in the United States is less than one per million transfused units. Iatrogenic medical or dental exposure People can be exposed to HCV via inadequately or improperly sterilized medical or dental equipment. Equipment that may harbor contaminated blood if improperly sterilized includes needles or syringes, hemodialysis equipment, oral hygiene instruments, and jet air guns, etc. Scrupulous use of appropriate sterilization techniques and proper disposal of used equipment can reduce the risk of iatrogenic exposure to HCV to virtually zero. Occupational exposure to blood Medical and dental personnel, first responders (e.g., firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, law enforcement officers), and military combat personnel can be exposed to HCV through accidental exposure to blood through accidental needlesticks or blood spatter to the eyes or open wounds. Universal precautions to protect against such accidental exposures significantly reduce the risk of exposure to HCV. Recreational exposure to blood Contact sports and other activities, such as "slam dancing" that may result in accidental blood-to-blood exposure are potential sources of exposure to HCV.[13] Sexual exposure Sexual transmission of HCV is considered to be rare. Studies show the risk of sexual transmission in heterosexual, monogamous relationships is extremely rare or even null.[14][15] The CDC does not recommend the use of condoms between long-term monogamous discordant couples (where one partner is positive and the other is negative).[16] However, because of the high prevalence of hepatitis C, this small risk may translate into a non-trivial number of cases transmitted by sexual routes. Vaginal penetrative sex is believed to have a lower risk of transmission than sexual practices that involve higher levels of trauma to anogenital mucosa (anal penetrative sex, fisting, use of sex toys).[17] Body piercings and tattoos Tattooing dyes, ink pots, stylets and piercing implements can transmit HCV-infected blood from one person to another if proper sterilization techniques are not followed. Hey =)... I was wondering if you could give me some advice on a tattoo I got a week ago? It is on the top of my foot and is of a lily flower with a butterfly sitting on it... anyways I am a volunteer firefighter and the day I got it done (two saturdays ago) when I got home from the tattoo parlour we had a rather large storm followed by fires from trees falling on hydro lines and houses and such so I was on my feet for a lot of that day and although it was bandaged, I think the bandage rubbed on the butterfly because when I removed the bandage the next day to clean it, it was pussy... I can't seem to get it to stop pussing in the butterfly... the rest of the tattoo seems to be healing fine its just the butterfly... I have stopped with the A&D ointment and was putting a little bit of antibacterial ointment on the butterfly but it hasn't seemed to be working... I put Hydrogen Peroxide on it about an hour ago because I'm sure it is infected somewhat. I think some of the colour came out of it when it pussed... anyways do you have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated. =D PS: Since the fire calls I have been wearing flats that don't rub on the tattoo at all. more

well i'm 18 and my mom believes i'm going to be a firefighter (which is half right) thing is, i want to be a tattooist (and i'm working on a portfolio) and she doesn't know this. i do also want to be a volunteer firefighter because the only difference is the pay and i dont need to be wealthy. but mainly i want to get into tattooing. my mom is constantly on my case about my lip piercings and my plugs. (going to 1") whenever i head to a tattoo or piercing parlor she gets all pissy and cusses up a storm. she constantly says how she's "disappointed in me" whenever i talk about tattoos, get one or anything about piercings. i've wanted to be a tattoo artist since i was 14 and have been interested in art for all of my life and i know this is something i want to do for the rest of my life i dont want to break the news to her until i actually have an apprenticeship. when she badmouths me in all this some of me doesn't care because i know she's a very unaccepting person but just cause it's my mom i feel all ehh about it. she doesn't change my mind about anything though, i know what i want and wont stop till i get it. but she just pleads with me not to get more tats or to stretch my ears anymore. it gets annoying i feel like i'm just rambling and not really asking a question. think i should tell her now or when i actually have an apprenticeship? i dont want to come off as mean (even though i know i'm not being that way) the constant harrassment i get from her really bothers me well i mean i still am living under her roof dont really want to be kicked out.. well yeah i know living is expencive (especially in the us right now) and i dont need to be wealthy but yes i do want to be finantially set and not have to struggle, as long as i can support myself and maybe a child then i'll be good more

I have an idea of getting the maltese cross, with flames in the background and a fire axe and a wrench crossing infront of it. What do you guys think of this? I am going to see if i cant get someone to draw it up. The fire ax and the wrench are importnat to me hence why i choose them and the maltese cross is another firefighter symbol. I am going to be a firefighter and wanted a tattoo for the past 5 years. I have been seriously deciding on what to get and where to get it the last year. I have finally decided on the tattoo that I want to get. I want the tattoo on my upper arm. I am not if I want it to be covered by the sleeve, or half of the tattoo showing under the sleeve so people can see it. Here is the description of the tattoo and a picture of what it looks like. http://home.c2i.net/espurkel/onlythestrong.jpg Discription: a small cross, that looks like it is poked through my skin, with both ends sticking out the "hole" in my skin. The words "Only the Strong Survive" will be place on the cross. The words Only the, will be on the top of the cross, Strong will be in the middle, and Survive, will be on the bottom. I had a tough life when I was growing up and had to deal with many difficult times. There are many obstacles I had to face to get to where I am today. Any thoughts on my idea, and the location are appreciated. more

I am currently a college student and am thinking about getting a barb wire tattoo on my left bicep. I have always wanted one and until recently am VERY serious about the idea. I work out regularly and have around 16 inch arms. I am saying this because it will not be on someone who is super skinny. I am not sure if that would matter how it looks though. Also, my major will be a firefighter in a year and the tattoo I get will not affect my chances of getting hired after graduation. He will be in his uniform. I'm a big girl so I was wondering what I should wear because I never go anywhere that I have to dress up.
