CHAPTER 1 Seven children lay on the rocks at the edge of the lake. A dark haired girl and six boys all obviously older than her. This image is forever imprinted in my mind. Myself, my brothers before everything changed. Before I was given the strangest gift. Before I became immortal. “Don't lean over so far, Ivy. You might fall in,” said Liam. He was a year older than me and insisted on using his little authority over me to the extreme. You could understand it, I suppose. After all, there were six brothers in total, and five of them were older than he was. I ignored him and swam down in it's mysterious depths. “Don't you think she might fall in, Alexis?” There was a long silence. As it stretched out, we stared at Alexis, who lay on his back, his whole body laying on top of a giant flat rock. He wasn't sleeping. His hair was spread out on the rock in a wild black entangle. “The fairies are coming tonight,” said Alexis, at last. He sat up slowly and frowned at me while I floated in the water. “Get out, Ivy. You can't swim very well.” I got out of the water and sat on a rock in between Alexis and Liam. My gown was soaked in water and you could hear the water as it dripped off my gown and splattered against the rocks. “How can you know that? How can you be so sure?” challenged Liam, “It could be tomorrow or the day after or they couldn't even be coming this way at all.” I don't remember Alexis answering but later on that day, he took my hand and led me back to the lake. In the semidarkness, I could see small fairies dancing around, showering sparks everywhere. They were like fireflies, only better. The last traces of a sun caught white movement in the darkening sky. Then they were near enough for us to see their orderly formation cutting through the cool night air as the light faded and we were thrust into darkness. The rush of wings, the thud when they landed. My brother lifted me into his arms and made his way to where the fairies had landed. I clung to him, excited yet scared. They saw us approaching and gave us the same customary bows as the servants back home. As we got closer and closer, I could see them more. The fairies had glowing white skin, pointed ears and white wings. They all were wearing short tunics belted at the waist. Purple tattoos were imprinted on their right cheekbone, twinkling in the moonlight. They were beautiful in a mysterious, dangerous way. One of the fairies didn't seem at all cautious and walked boldly up to us. She didn't say anything but stared at us. Then she reached her hand up and caressed my cheek. I shiver at her powerful magical touch. “This girl,” she said, her voice soft and silky like the lullaby Mother sings me, “is special. We want her.” “W-what?” said Alexis, shocked. I was sure he wasn't expecting this. “We want her to be one of us,” said the fairy, turning to Alexis. The moonlight shone down on her eyes which I could see were a deep purple. “Y-you c-can't! You can't ta-ta-take her!” Alexis stuttered. “She's my sister!” “What difference does that make to us?” asked the fairy. “None but....but....but...” said Alexis, unable to continue. Another fairy who had been watching this came over. “Don't worry. We cannot take her even though we wish.” Relief flooded my brother's face. “Why not?” “Because she is royalty,” said the fairy, “As the ancient law states we are not allowed to take future rulers. However, this girl will be given a gift.” With that, she stepped up and pressed her palm against my brow, muttering something under her breath. Sparks danced down her arms, hands, and into me. I shivered as it touched me. “This girl has been given a gift of trust and immortality.” I was five years old at the time. more

Open Question: looking for an angel tattoo...?

I want to get my tattoo in the next couple of months. The idea in my head it an angel. her body is turned facing away from the person viewing it, but her head and her shoulders are partially turned to look back at the viewer. I want her to be wearing only two thin strips of cloth, just barely covering her butt and her chest. and I want her wings to be HUGE. I'm Italian, as as a memorial for my grandparents and family members that have passed away, I wish to get a tattoo. It will say "Nessuno Muore" meaning 'nobody dies'. I've been thinking about getting a tattoo that represents my dad. I haven't decided for sure if I'm going to get one yet, but I'm trying to come up with some designs. My dad died when I was seven. Voting Question: One Life One Chance tatt... expressed by design not words?

My boyfriend is absolutely SET on getting "One Life, One Chance" tattooed across his biceps. Personally, I think this is a huge trashy mistake that he will regret, but as it is his body, he can get whatever he wants inked on it. However, he's an artist, and I think that if I can find a design that expresses the same thing without the giant lettering, I think that he'll appreciate that much more in the long run. However... my artistic gift is limited, and I'm really struggling to come up with ideas. What kind of tatt can I recommend that has the same meaning, but without the huge ugly ass lettering and angel wings? (Seriously... Resolved Question: Is this normal after getting a new tattoo?

Hey guys, I just got a tattoo on my wrist. It's a butterfly with frayed wings and stars around it, with a curly black line that wraps around my wrist and connects everything. The color of the stars and butterfly is aqua and dark blue right now but he did put some lavender in it that he said would get brighter and more noticeable as it heals. I've been doing what the paper says--every hour wash it with cold water and anti-bacterial soap, pat dry, and apply ointment (A&D ointment). But my questions are: should I be covering it with a bandage? And, is it normal for some of the color to be bleeding out and for it to be bumpy? When I slept it got on my shirt and I basically have half a butterfly imprinted on my pajama shirt. It also oozes when I wash it and put on the ointment. Should I be using lotion instead? What kind (specifics please!) Do I have to wash it each time I apply lotion/ointment? If you could answer these questions, that'd be great! I'd also appreciate any other advice you have. So I'm turning 18 in a few days. I know for a fact I want three tattoos. One down, two to go. The three biggest things in my life are as follows, my late grandfather, fishing/the river, and horses. I already have two birds holding a lung cancer awareness ribbon on my foot for my grandfather. He died of lung cancer, and he had an eagle tattoo so I had a more feminine version of a winged animal to hold the awareness ribbon. I want two overlapping horse shoes for my horse passion. Okay....so here is the deal!!! I'm 30 years old and stay fit. I go to a gym and just finished running my first half marathon back in November. I have been married 5 years and with my husband a total of 8 years. I have a masters degree and work as an accountant and plan to sit for the CPA exam within the next year. I'm telling you all this first of all to show you that I am not your stereotypical lower back tattoo candidate. I'm not a tramp and haven't been with many people in my life. I've always had nothing but the highest of morals. Anyways, I have been thinking about getting a lower back tattoo for a while and my husband thinks that it will look really good and he has been encouraging me to "just do it". So, I put a deposit down on the design that I want and I wanted to share it with you guys and its significance to me and see what you think. First off, it will be a red rose in the middle of a tribal design. I know that roses are typical, but "believe it or not" it has significance to me and there was a reason I chose this. The rose itself is in honor of my grandmother who died in January. She was known for her green thumb and before she died she wanted to smell a real rose. So, my church contacted a rose greenery down in Texas and they sent her a rose bush for free and my dad took a picture of her sitting next to it. That was the last picture taken of her before she died and the place in Texas has planned on naming a rose after my grandmother, "Claribel." A lot of people say that I have a lot of her strength inside of me! The red color stands for love, respect, and strength. Beneath the rose, the chinese symbol for water will stem down (possibly in green with thorns and possibly just stay black) and it stands for life, higher wisdom, transformation, renewal, intuition, and blessing. I may have a drop of water falling off of the bottom of this symbol. This part of the tattoo stands for all of the adversities that I have faced over the past year and overcome. My family has been through so much, but we are survivors and are moving forward! I also graduated and finished my college education (finally) this past year. It took me forever to do that! This tattoo will be like freezing a moment in my life that I never want to forget. A moment when the odds were against me and I persevered!!! Ironically, the water symbol is also my astrological sign as well since I am a Cancer. Anyway....Here is a link to my idea. Ive been looking for a while to get ideas for a tattoo that represents struggle, strength and survival. Ive been put through a lot in my life and im only 20. From foster care to drugs to a really bad family. But now im in college and got my life together. i wanted to get it on my upper back, i was thinking maybe adding wings also. I just want some ideas ill personalize it once i have an idea. i dont want anything dumb like a butterfly or koi fish...something a little more original yet pretty thanks for all the ideas i really appreciate it! more

So I am nineteen years old and, not to toot my own horn, but I guess you could say I'm a pretty talented artist. I'm really good at drawing and stuff. So for a while now I have thought that it would be cool to be a tattoo artist. It's just something I think I would really love. I love tattoos (even though I don't have any yet, a lot of my friends and family have them, and everyone's always told me I should get into the business due to my natural talent. So a few days ago I went with my sister to get her a tattoo by one of her friends who is a tattoo artist. While I was there I showed the tattoo artist my portfolio and she agreed to give me an apprenticeship. For those of you who don't know, an apprenticeship is when an artist takes you under their wing so to speak and teach you how to tattoo. The thing is- you don't get payed. But it's just as time consuming and exhausting as a real job. Most apprenticeships start off with you being the shops' you-know-what for a while. Doing everything for everyone and cleaning among other things.. for no pay. Then once they see you are committed, they teach you the trade. Some apprenticeships last for 1-2 years before you become a real tattoo artist. This girl (my apprentice) is willing give me a job in 8 weeks. EIGHT WEEKS!! It's a great opportunity for someone as young as me. However- my family is in some hard times right now financially and my sister crashed our only running car.. then crashed the rental car. Yes, I'm serious. So we are currently borrowing a friend's car. Now I have to be at the shop 4 days a week and typically I stay there for 7-10 hours at a time. A lot of hours for someone making no money, right ? Not to mention the gas money and hassle it takes to get back and forth. I also am faced with the dilemma of not being able to go to college if I become a tattoo artist. I am 19 right now and have yet to start any classes, but I was scheduled to start this May. If I do so, I won't have time to be a tattoo artist. So I kinda have to choose between the two. If I put off tattooing for now, it's almost guaranteed I will not find an opportunity to become a tattoo artist so quickly, or at all down the road. So it's tough. A lot of my friends and family are very excited for me and congratulating me on my apprenticeship so I feel like if I decide not to do it, they will all think I wasted a huge opportunity and be disappointed. I know I'm an adult and my choices are my choices.. but it's just some added pressure that doesn't help. It's just that ever since I started this apprenticeship (4 days now) I have been exhausted and in a bad mood and almost feel depressed. And knowing that there is no paycheck at the end of the week doesn't help. It's been a hassle getting back and forth and even though I have 2 days off until I have to go back, I have anxiety thinking about going back. When I'm at the shop, I have no cash for lunch usually so the tattoo artist has to buy me food which is embarrassing. My parents don't really have the money to give me, either. I usually have no gas to get there so I have to hitch a ride from someone. Plus, I don't have time to work out regularly like I used to which sucks. Am I wasting my time ? Is it really worth it ? Do I really want to be a tattoo artist this bad ? Is it wrong to put off college for this ? Am I just being lazy ? So many things going through my head. I can't find a job right now either and even if I did, It would be tough juggling both a job and my apprenticeship at the same time. I wanted to explain my situation and get some outside perspective on the whole thing. What do you gather from this ? Should I continue with it ? more
