I live in a multicultural area called Weatherfield which is just outside Manchester. It has a sizable islamic population and I am keen to get the community to socialise more. The local muslim men have little to do and I often see them in group around the back of the mosque and in the park, drinking cans of super strength lager. As I am all for social inclusion, i have decided to open a new bar, and it will be called THE MUSLIMAH. I have named it this, to appeal to the muslim men. The bar will service snacks, hot/cold beverages and for those feeling a little more daring, there will be a fine selection of beers, wines and spirits. I have to write this essay pretending i am going to france (for geography class) and we have to eat 3 square meals a day and this is the guidelines: Breakfast: Main dish, 2 sides, and a beverage Lunch: Main dish, 2 sides, dessert, beverage Dinner: Appetizer, Salad, 2 sides, Main Dish, Dessert, Beverage And i have to "be in france" for two days. so 6 full meals! They have to be purely authentic french foods. Ive thought of a few classics like escargot, Pate, stuff like that! Can you list some french foods? AND WE'RE NOT ALLOWED TO DRINK WINE IN OUR ESSAY!Sorry! My teachers rules :\ No wine he said. which is crazy. And idk why we need sides in breakfast. I can barely finish a half a bagel :P moreResolved Question: What's a good and inexpensive red wine for someone who hates wine?
My husband and I rarely drink. I especially dislike the taste of alcohol, I don't care for beer or hard liquor and will only partake when the beverage is on the "sweet" side (i.e.-apple cider ale, Mike's lemonade, rum with fruit juice... etc). I would like to start drinking of red wine, mainly for the health benefits. However, since I have the palate of a three-year-old, it's hard to find wine I can tolerate. Mostly, I find wine of any type to be too bitter and acidic tasting--just not pleasant at all; I can barely finish a small glass. So, I haven't been able to "train" my buds to appreciate wine, much less drink it without making the "yuck" face. Can anyone recommend an inexpensive red wine that won't entirely offend my infantile taste buds? I live in the suburbs of a big city, so I do have access to plenty of choices, including Trader Joe's, Cost Plus, and Whole Foods. (please, red wine suggestions only--not interested in white or rosé). Thanks! PS-I did try a red wine once that I liked (can't remember type or vintner). It was Italian, very expensive, very delicate, and nearly flavorless (there had a very faint oak taste, but zero bitterness and no acidic aftertaste). I haven't tried anything like it since. Any ideas what it could have been?I want to answer Gerry G's question with a question: Why waste time answering at all when you can better spend your time watching "Sideways" and snickering snobbishly at anyone who can't "appreciate" life on as many finely attuned levels as you do? moreResolved Question: Why can't I lose just 10 lbs?
I'm a very healthy person.. 22 years old, 5'4", 140lbs. I had a baby 17 months ago and gained about 60lbs during my pregnancy which is alot, I know.. I don't know how I gained so much to begin with since at the time I was in the army and waking up at 5:30am every morning to work out and do PT.. I ate normal with a little extra junk here and there but not at alarming rates.. was far from being diagnosed with gestational diabetes.. Anyways, my pregnancy weight was 125-130 and I lost all my "baby fat" 6 months after my son was born but can't seem to get rid of these lingering 10 lbs I have left. I want to lose it the healthy way but I'm starting to think I'm going to have to do something extreme to lose it. I work out everyday.. I have a treadmill at home and I jog or walk 3-5 miles almost everyday, lift hand weights, pilates, hula hoop, jump rope. I'm doing something every single day and I stay active because I like to. I don't drink ANY soda and rarely eat out.. never fast food though. Here's an example of what I eat in a day: Breakfast: organic vanilla yogurt with fresh berries (raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries) Snack: Babybell swiss cheese with a few pretzels Lunch: Avacado/Turkey sandwhich on whole wheat bread Snack: Fruit (like watermelon and pineapple) or fruit smoothie (banana, strawberries, yogurt, milk, and peanut butter) Dinner: Something like spaghetti, broccoli, garlic bread.. I always cook things using healthy alternatives.. like ground turkey in place of ground beef, yogurt to substitute vegetable oil in baking, olive oil to substitute butter... things like that. I drink water, home made lemonade, beer, wine (only 1 alcoholic beverage a day usually), coffee, green tea, or orange juice. I'm also doing Jullian Michaels 14 day cleanse right now and am on day 4... no results yet. Any suggestions on what I could do different are very much appreciated. Thanks! moreResolved Question: Do you think this can explain the housing bubble in a way you will understand?
Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Detroit. She realizes that virtually all of her customers are unemployed alcoholics and, as such, can no longer afford to patronize her bar. To solve this problem, she comes up with a new marketing plan that allows her customers to drink now, but pay later. Heidi keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting the customers' loans). Word gets around about Heidi's "drink now, pay later" marketing strategy and, as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar. Soon she has the largest sales volume for any bar in Detroit. By providing her customers freedom from immediate payment demands, Heidi gets no resistance when, at regular intervals, she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most consumed beverages. Consequently, Heidi's gross sales volume increases massively. A young and dynamic vice-president at the local bank recognizes that these customer debts constitute valuable future assets and increases Heidi's borrowing limit. He sees no reason for any undue concern, since he has the debts of the unemployed alcoholics as collateral. At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert traders figure a way to make huge commissions, and transform these customer loans into DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then bundled and traded on international security markets. Naive investors don't really understand that the securities being sold to them as AAA secured bonds are really the debts of unemployed alcoholics. Nevertheless, the bond prices continuously climb, and the securities soon become the hottest-selling items for some of the nation's leading brokerage houses. One day, even though the bond prices are still climbing, a risk manager at the original local bank decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar. He so informs Heidi. Heidi then demands payment from her alcoholic patrons, but being unemployed alcoholics they cannot pay back their drinking debts. Since Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations she is forced into bankruptcy. The bar closes and the eleven employees lose their jobs. Overnight, DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS drop in price by 90%. The collapsed bond asset value destroys the banks liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans, thus freezing credit and economic activity in the community. The suppliers of Heidi's bar had granted her generous payment extensions and had invested their firms' pension funds in the various BOND securities. They find they are now faced with having to write off her bad debt and with losing over 90% of the presumed value of the bonds. Her wine supplier also claims bankruptcy, closing the doors on a family business that had endured for three generations, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local plant and lays off 150 workers. Fortunately though, the bank, the brokerage houses and their respective executives are saved and bailed out by a multi-billion dollar no-strings attached cash infusion from their cronies in Government. The funds required for this bailout are obtained by new taxes levied on employed, middle-class, non-drinkers who have never been in Heidi's bar. I enjoy social drinking. I don't like getting too drunk. I will be getting married soon. I would like to have a special drink, that tastes excellent, not too much ingredients and does not make you drunk. Kinda like a wine drink, but not wine. Anyone have any ideas. We are often trying to convince others that our beliefs are correct, but rarely listening to other people. Please tell me what (if any) special foods and/or drinks you consume or avoid to practise your religion/faith/ideology/philosophy. Also state why you do so and what you believe. Do not try to convert us with your answer. I for one am a Christian who takes communion (bread and wine/grape juice) every few weeks. There are no foods that I avoid for religious purposes (except ones offered to idols - not that I've come across these), but sometimes I fast. I drink a small amount of alcohol (a glass of wine with a meal and a couple of beers when watching sport with the boys) but don't get drunk. I have had lower abdominal pain on & off for about 6 months, but my doctor can't find anything wrong and it's not enough of a pain that it really bothers me, but there must be something wrong for it to continually occur, right? its about 2-3" (3 fingers width) diagonal left of my belly button and it feels somewhat like a pressure and at times a sharp aching feeling. HOW? whose do you think, is the MOST CELEBRATED?
Was just exchanging posts on Profiles with "MissLimLam", in which birthdays was a side topic; this I guess is what prompted my question. She mentioned that Vivaldi's birthday was coming up; and this coupled with the recent celebration of "hafwen"'s birthday that "tucomena" had arranged on her blog , I guess all together coalesced in the spawning of my question(s). (1) Whose(if any) do you celebrate? How, in what manner, in what way? Just toast them with a glass of wine, or whatever's your favorite drink/beverage? Actually attend an event, birthday celebration of some kind? (2) What's the most unique/impressive/extravagant celebration of a composer's birthday do you know of? (3) Which composer(s) do you think is the MOST celebrated? Can you substantiate? Mine of course as to be expected is that of Richard Wagner. But to be completely honest about it, I don't even know if his birthday is celebrated or not - (pulls hat down over face, to hide embarrassment/chagrin). For some inexplicable reason I associate his passing with a cataclysmic event, rather than remembering his birthday as one to be celebrated. This being the August 27, 1883 eruption of Krakatoa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracatau#The_1883_eruption Wagner's birth/death dates: May 22, 1813 - February 13, 1883. Even though he died in May of 1883, and the Krakatoa eruption didn't occur until August of that year, I've somehow put the two together in my mind - go figure. Ok, so let me begin this by saying I don't know if I've ever really had a party- sad, isn't it? I'm 26, and I don't know a lot of people in the city where I live so I kind of rely on my boyfriend for my social life. A few months ago I moved into a new apartment and was going to throw a housewarming party but it never really happened. My boyfriend went around telling a lot of people we knew (mostly people he knew that I knew through him) that I was going to host said party and then they started asking about it. Well after so many months had passed, I thought it was a little late for a housewarming party, but figured it would do us all good to just get together. So I told him to invite anyone he wanted over the weekend after Valentine's Day- this weekend coming up. He invited his best friend and his wife, a friend of mine, and a friend of his he knows from school. So far I think that's all. Well I was thinking he was going to be off work on Saturday, and that this would happen around 6 or 7. AFTER he invites all these people he informs me that he has to be at a school function in the morning on Saturday and has to work and close Saturday night, and won't be home until 9:30-10. We didn't really tell them a time, but my concern is that they won't want to come this late. I mean, 10 isn't that late really, but it is late if you have to get up and go to work the next day or whatever. So I'm either going to be stuck doing this by myself so it can be earlier or much later than I wanted it to be so he can be there too. Well, my apartment is fairly open and not too small for a one bedroom, but I only have one couch. And a very small TV. The only other chairs I have are 4 wooden chairs that go to my kitchen table. When I got upset with him about the information he was telling me he was like, "well this is your thing. Do you expect me to go invite all the friends and plan the party?" I thought that was a little rude and uncalled for. I obviously do not expect him to do that, but we have been together for 3 years! Even though the party is at my apartment, we are inviting mutual friends and I kind of thought it would be *our* party. Not where he just invites his friends over then leaves me to do all the work. So I'm mad at him, because I feel like he has no intention of helping with this, and he thinks I'm dumping it on him. Then, I'm kind of in the dark about what to do. I don't want everybody to just be bored out of their minds over here. I was thinking about buying a game, like Cranium, and getting some beer and maybe some Smirnoff or something. I also have a couple bottles of wine. I was also going to pick up a couple of pizzas. I have some speakers, so I can hook up some music, I guess, but really I just feel totally in the dark about this. I mean yes, it's just some friends coming over to hang out. But I still want it to be fun. We will drink but I don't want it to be the main focus. Any ideas? Thoughts on entertainment, seating, food, beverages, or the boyfriend situation would be greatly appreciated. Serious answers only please. moreVoting Question: Why would some people want to get drunk? What benefits are really there?
It's fine to drink a alcoholic beverage like beer, liquor or wine in moderation. But why go overboard and get drunk? I think there're no benefits, and one can be doing harm to others. A disadvantage is that it impairs one's thinking ability and logic. Well yes, it might produce a good feeling due to chemicals in brain. But it's not worth it. moreResolved Question: Manly wine coolers and such?
What is a manly wine cooler to drink? If you can't think of one, then what is an alcoholic beverage that tastes good, but is not a wine cooler? In other words, even if there was no alcohol in it, you would still drink it because you like the taste. moreResolved Question: Menu ideas? Gourmet food?

I am a professional in a field that requires specific muscle movements and accuracy to be successful. Over the course of the past year, a progressive tremor has pervaded my daily performance of certain movements. The tremor is kinetic in nature, triggered only by motions which mimic eating with utensils, and drinking from a glass. The tremor is slowly eroding my capacity to perform menial tasks in my career, a career that I would not be quick to part from. A neurologist diagnosed the symptoms as essential tremor recently, and prescribed beta-blockers. I have been taking the medicine for several months with no improvement. Would I benefit from seeking physical therapy? I am very active, and have considered the possibility that I am simply putting a great amount of stress on my shoulders and arms, leading to tremor-like symptoms. I am under 30 years old, and I eat a very balanced, healthy diet. I avoid all soft-drinks, caffeinated beverages such as coffee and teas, and beer. A common aid against essential tremors is alcohol, so I occasionally drink red wine, with very little results. I exercise 7 days a week, including strength-training, and daily cardiovascular exercise. There are no known cases of movement disorders in my family. moreVoting Question: Should a liquor store merchant ask you for identification (ID), if you're only buying soda?
My son is 27, and I am well lets just day way over 40, went into a liquor store. At the counter I sat down a bottle of brandy, but for got that I didn't have any soda at home. I told my son to pay for the brandy, while I went back to look for soda. When I came back, my son was waiting for me by the store entrance so I proceed to wait my turn as a lady ahead of me finish making her purchase of a case of wine. She looked to be about my age or maybe a few years younger. When it was my turn to pay for my soda, the cashier asked me for my ID. I looked at her as if she had two heads, then at my SODA, then at the woman who had just purchased a CASE OF WINE leave. I asked the cashier if she ask that lady who just left for her ID, and she said, "no." She said, "that lady looked over 40." I said, "I'm only buying SODA why do you need my ID." She said, "because you didn't look 40." I told her that the few times I've come to this store I get carded. I told her at first I understood, but now it was getting on my nerves. BUT TO BE CARDED TO PURCHASE SODA IS RIDICULOUS. She smiled after looking at my ID and said, "51 you don't look 51, I don't know what you can do, maybe dress different or maybe it's just good genes." She told my son, "You're lucky to have those genes." Oh, and yes my son was carded, but he is 27, and to be carded is UNDERSTANDABLE. Is it a liquor stores personal preference to card a customer for buying SODA? I wonder if the soft beverage companies are aware of this? I wonder what would have happen if I refused to show my ID, or if SOMEONE else did not have ID to buy soda from this store, would the store refuse to sell them SODA? Please leave a comment. moreResolved Question: What alcoholic beverages are best for your weight?

I bought a bottle of Francis Ford Coppola's Syrah-Shiraz about a week ago, and unfortunately didn't have the chance to try it before I had to head back across the country. So I decided to pour the wine into a seal proof metal beverage container, wrap it in plastic and take it with me across the country. It was there in the suit case for a little more than a day, and when I got back to my place I immediately put it in the fridge. My question is, is this wine still safe to drink? or is it more likely that it's turned through the journey, and should be thrown out. I never opened the container, during any time that it's been in a room temperature environment. And so far, it's been in the fridge for 5 days. So what would you guys say, safe to drink? or better to dump? moreResolved Question: Should these foods/drinks be banned?

A friend of mine told me that if you were to add sugar to any alcoholic beverage, such as wine or beer, the more alcoholic it becomes, and if you added enough, the alcoholic content would be so high that it would be dangerous to drink. While I knew that pure alcohol is fatal, I never thought that adding sugar can increase the alcohol content. I immediately got an idea for a scene in a novel I am writing, but I want to make sure this is true before I add it. Does adding sugar to alcoholic beverages make it more alcoholic, and if enough is added, become dangerous?
