Wine Discounts Questions asked

Resolved Question: should we ask if people prefer white or red wine on reply cards?

We are unable to afford an open bar (itll up our budget by several thousand dollars) Instead we have decided to have wine service with dinner. We are being offered a steeply discounted rate if we pre-order the wine thru the venue ($8 off per bottle pre ordered). We are having about 85 guests. We will offer 1 red, 1 white. We are offering salmon, and pork. The wedding is in November. On the reply card, when we give the option for a meal, should we also mention the option for wine choice? I was thinking this way itll be more clear that there isnt going to be an open bar (We are offering wine service, and a cash bar for those who would like something else to drink). Also, we will be able to more accurately pre order the wine. Otherwise, whatever wine is consumed outside of what we order we will have to pay the normal rate. What do you think??We are offering both. I just want to know who wants what so we can appropriately order the right amount before hand.we were going to order about 30 bottles, it was just a matter of how much of each. Thanks for responding! more

Resolved Question: is it rude not to have an open bar?

My fiance and I are on a very tight budget. We both work full time and are saving everything we can for the wedding. We have decided to have wine service for our guests during dinner and are trying our hardest to afford at least a passed signature cocktail during cocktail hour. We are having our wedding at a stunning venue off season that we typically couldnt afford if we didnt do it in November. We will have apps for our guests during cocktail hour, and then a full three course meal. I feel so awful though not offering an open bar. My friends assure me this is nothing to worry about but I still feel like a stiff. What is the ruling on that kind of thing these days? Who else is not financially able to offer an open bar, and how do you feel? Again, our guests wont go drink less (we are buying about 30 bottles of wine from the venue for our 75 guests to be served during dinner) We chose this route because if we pre order the wine we are getting a steeply discounted rate and our guests will at least be served some alcohol. What do you think? Speaking of wine, In order to get the discounted rate we need to pre order the wine. I am having trouble deciding how much white vs. red we should order and whether we should have the wine served or if we should have service for the first glass, and then the bottle available for free pouring service on the tables. We are offering both salmon (my favorite) and boless pork loin (his favorite) and the wedding is in NovemberIm a bostonian for the record, and darn proud of it! more

Resolved Question: Applications of Linear Equations..?

Hello If you could just show me some working out and explanation it would be very useful. Thanks Q1. A wine merchant buys 50 cases of wine. He pays full price for half of them but gets a 40% discount on the other half. If he paid a total of $2260, how much was the full price of a single case? Q2. Three boys compare their marble collection. The first boy has 14 less than the second boy, who has twice as many as the third boy. If between them, they have 71 marbles, how many does each boy have? Thanks Everyone more

Resolved Question: What are the extra costs for a cruise to mexico?

I've never been, and I have been trying to do some research. We are planning to go with our $4,500 tax return. We are thinking of going on RC 7 night to mexico. We are trying to do this as cheap as possible. Here is what I have figured my budget would be so far, but I don't know if this is realistic. Balcony room: 1498 (729 each person) Fuel charge: 160 (because the texas fuel company is charging more then $65 a barrel right now) Taxes & Fees: 500 (I really don't know about this one, they say port charges are included, but I can't find anything more about what taxes would cost) Tips: 150 (10/day per person) Gas: 280 (round trip from Portland oregon to LA) Car parking: 100 (for 8 days at the port?, $12/day) Drinks: 200 (because we are allowed a couple bottles of wine and we will sneak in a corkscrew and flask) Massage: 200 (because we want to, and Ive read that they give discounts when in port...is this true?) Snorkeling in Cabo: 140 (I found a separate company aside from what is offered by the cruise ship, that will pick you up at port and drive you back and forth) Total: 2928...is this realistic for what I have listed? What else should I consider? I have yet to think of what other off shore excursions we could do in Puerto Vallarta and Mazatian, but I know it will be cheaper to find them ourselves instead of going through the cruise ship. Also we are planning on going in May, Im trying to avoid spring break and Hurricane season but also have nice weather...is this a good month to go? Im thinking spring break is more like March and April? more

Resolved Question: Rehearsal Dinner- how to get groom's parents excited/interested?

I am getting married on New Year's Day next year. The Rehearsal Dinner will be New Year's Eve. I know that the Rehearsal Dinner is the groom's parents' job traditionally, and they have been gracious to reserve a very nice location for the event. The occasion is well-within their budget without sacrificing a nice evening, and they are not breaking the bank to pay for the event. However, the future-in-laws are not used to entertaining or even really interested in discussing the rehearsal or wedding. (They are retired and do have the time to have such conversations). How do I approach these following topics without seeming like a bridezilla, or how do I generally approach having more input in the event (my fiance is not good at communicating these ideas): 1. My friend has offered to play piano for the event for free and I would very much like him to play. 2. At midnight, I would be so very touched to have Auld Lang Syne played is the song has additional meaning to my fiancee and I as well as many other guests that will be at the rehearsal. 3. They are planning to keep the venue open until midnight, is there a polite way to request that a sparkling beverage be served for the New Year? 4. I'm also slightly miffed they they did not respond to my offer to supply wine from a friend's winery at wholesale. (They wine is special to my fiance and I, cheaper at my discount than the caterer sells his, and he permits outside alcohol with adequate notice). It doesn't even seem logical to buy the wine w/ the caterer's mark-up. We are using the same caterer for the reception the next day and we're having the same wine at half the cost his parents are electing to have it at. P.S. The reason I need to get some resolutions for these issues are booking my block of hotel room depending on how many guests will be invited, among other concerns. I have a very busy year this year and have the next couple weeks off and want to have as much in place as possible.Wow. I never claimed my wedding was "original", it does however fall on the only legitimate Saturday between my semesters that I am able to have a wedding. Having it on that Saturday also allowsthe few out of town guests to travel on a Friday without taking of from work, IF they wish to come down for the rehearsal. Additionally, the overwhelming majority of my guests live in town, so I am not usurping their New Year's Eve plans. I plan on inviting people, not summoning them. I am not planning a "cute" wedding, I'm planning a meaningful one with a lot more emphasis on what I believe to be a meaningful ceremony. I really don't understand why their are such vitriolic people on this website. I just asked a simple question. No need to berate ANYONE on this website. If you feel I'm being over the top, either don't answer the question, suggest that I wait a specified timeframe to approach my future-in-laws, or tell me I just need to keep mum and leave the ideas/planning to them. more

Resolved Question: is it illegal to discount alcohol in california?

I am the manager of a restaurant and would like to know if I can run a special on drink. Can we offer free (100% discount) alcoholic drinks? Including beer, wines, and cocktails? more

Resolved Question: Is it better to book with a travel agent or the cruise line directly?

I've book right on Carnival.com for my last 2 cruises but now I hear travel agents can get you free stateroom upgrades, free stuff onboard like wine, and even shipboard credit. I always figured travel agents just got people good rates by giving them a room in the crappiest location on the ship (because of course when you book with a travel agent you book a cruise, when you book on Carnival you select your stateroom number) I was wondering how exactly they go about getting you all this extra stuff and good rates?. Carnival's good past guest program doesn't start until after your 11th cruise so for my next 9 cruises all I'm getting is a gold S&S card and the "past guest discount" which I bet is just like $20 off since it's still expensive. more

Resolved Question: What else can we do at Napa Valley (CA) if I don’t drink wine? Romantic, surprise, fun idea needed :)?

I bought 2 wine train certificates at discount price. It’s a wine testing train with 3 courses meal at Napa Valley. Even though we are not a wine drinker but I thought this will be fun and great surprise for our wedding anniversary. Oh, another thing, the wedding anniversary date and her birthday is on the same day. So, this is not a regular anniversary. It’s a combined gift, fun, surprise, combo thing. I’m a little on budget don’t have a lot to spend all out but want to make it special each year it comes around. We’ve going to Las Vegas for past 3 yrs … watch good show, eat good food, stay in a nice hotel (thanks to priceline, craigslist, and ebay) I’ve already booked and paid to priceline.com for flight, hotel, and car rental. That’s mean no refund back. The thing is I lost the Wine Train certificates. I could find them and I can’t change my plan. I don’t want to pay for another $200 for wine train but I don’t want to waste my trip going up there. Do you have any suggestion? I will fly over on Thursday night (Oct 29) and fly back on Sat night (Oct 31). It’s supposed to be a short surprise trip b/c I’m on budget. Now, I’m in a big black hole don’t know what to do. We’ve been driving up to San Francisco more than 10 times in the past 4 years. So, we don’t want to go to San Francisco again. We did camping trip from Big Sur all the way to Northern San Francisco area. We took relatives up there numerous times. So, no San Francis trip for us.No, I haven't look every else. I have to give it one more shot of looking everywhere. I tried to hide them from my wife but now I can't find it.Thanks guys, these are all good substitution. The bike ride, the picnic, and the castle sounds wonderful. Many thanks!! more

Resolved Question: "More Wine!" Help me: Burgundy, Bordeaux; what are some mellow affordable French Reds?

I specifically asked about Pinot Noir already - and i figured French, but i guess Napa has luck with Pinot, right? I have the movie Sideways like everyone else. ;) Now, i alter the Q some. I hear so much about French wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux, but i cannot narrow it down. Have you found one you really like that is mellow and very drinkable and affordable? Years ago, i found a red i liked from California, but now i can't find it. I am the type - if i FIND one i like, i'll just buy a case at a discount and be set for a year. When i do drink wine, i want to enjoy it. I hear so much talk about the French wines from certain regions, and they have cultivated wines for so long. What do you think? Thanks!Ah thank you. I'll consult Sideways again. i am already learning then that Pinot and Burgundy region are related - i seem to have a bit of a learning disability when it comes to wines - each country talks about it a bit differently. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Can you please recommend affordable wine for wedding.?

Our budget is 10-12 dollars a bottle (maybe a little extra if it is really good) We'll be buying by case so there will likely be a discount. Menu choices for guests are Surf Turf, Chicken Marsala, and Sea Bass. We'd like to offer a red and a white. Your help is greatly appreciated, the wedding is in three weeks! more

Resolved Question: What are the consequences for breaking SLED laws as a licencee when selling 1/2 priced drinks after 8:00 in SC?

Licensees may not offer two-or-more-for-the-price-of-one drink specials and may not give free mixed drinks, beer or wine. Regular drink prices may be reduced between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00p.m.. This is the law as written. Where I work we sell 1/2 priced bottles of wine all day and night until we close at 10p.m.. We just found out yesterday that this violates the SC state law above. My question is what are the consequences if caught and how would we remedy this without losing customers? My manager and I both think it would be in our best interests to just give the discounted price 4p.m.-8p.m. during happy hour. However, our owners want to take their chances. I want some hard evidence to discourage them and maybe some suggestions on how to deal with the "But I was here 2 week ago and you did it." customers.for one I will not disclose where I work but I will say it is NOT A BAR! we would never and have never let anyone in our establishment leave drunk or be served when coming in already drunk!! I AM NOT LOOKING FOR YOUR OPINIONS ON THE MATTER!!!!!!!! FACTS ONLY PLEASE!! more

Resolved Question: Here is my response to Semper, Ok?????

"It only says, Contents MAY Settle" Never wanting to pay full price, not willing to spend her hard earned.... Worth it, she believed, the thrill of shopping at thrift stores; seeking treasures in other people's discards. Making do as an art. Fixing this into that. Hoping to find a use for those. Intoxicated with rescuing, discounts, buying bottom shelf wines, she didn't realize she was giving into... The red flags of used car salesmen didn't register to her; still thinking she was being frugal with her motions. Cheap Value Bargains Trendy After all the final sales, she realized that bruised fruit doesn't heal, and dented cans will only leach toxins, and some contents never truly settle Some savings may not be worth the cost.thanks neon, I already noticed two 'somes' too close together..... THANKS! more

Resolved Question: wedding. I have no idea how much to budget?

Im starting to plan my wedding but Ive got no idea how much of my budget i should allocate to certain things. How much should I expect to pay for a basic wedding cake, nothing fancy. how much should I expect to pay for a photographer? again, nothing fancy, just a basic package. what on earth are wedding favours for? do i really need them? other than bouquets (one for me, one bridesmaid and one flower girl) and buttonhole for each guest, what other flowers do i need? Most venues ive looked at provide table flowers and if they dont I think i'd put something else in the centre of the table, (candles feather or something) is there anything Ive missed?I dont want any unexpected surprises... venue invites/table plan/name cards dresses/hair/makeup/shoes rings (I've seen one I love for £200) cars (I can arrange this for free through work) sit down meal/champagne for toast/wine for dinner buffet at evening (he can arrange this through work, very discounted) DJ (my dad) entertainer (magicial - best man) photographer registrar/legal fees honeymoon (hoping to get an all inclusive deal for £500-600each) cake groom/bestman suits Ive only got about £6-7k, I know its a very small budget so any suggestions to reduce costs would be great. more

Resolved Question: Best DISCOUNT liquor store in Boston area?

I'm looking for the best place to get reasonably-priced liquor in the Boston area (within a 50mi radius). I don't particularly care about selection (I'm looking for pretty common items, not rare wines, etc) or customer service, so please make suggestions by weighting cost as primary concern. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: I'm sorry about Michael Jackson, not sorry FOR him?

I didn't like Michael Jackson while he was alive, and I'm not sorry he's dead. That's a fact. I AM sorry that he said he loved ALL children but only hung out with 12 year old boys. I'm sorry he fed kids wine in baby bottles and showed them porn. I'm sorry he was so rich and famous that it was considered alright for a middle-aged man to share his bed with kids. I'm sorry he coldly betrayed Paul McCartney when he confided in him that he was going to buy the Beatles back catologue - sweet natured MJ decided to snatch them up for himself. Nice. I'm sorry that he was hooked on medication and screamed at the people who tried to help him. I'm sorry that he didn't produce a good album after Bad. I'm sorry that having millions and millions of dollars wasn't enough for him - that he was so greedy he went bankrupt. I'm sorry he fed lots of stories to the press in order to appear strange and different but then was furious because they called him Wacko Jacko. I'm sorry that he doesn't like black features and rearranged his face to suit society (I get that he had vitilego though). I'm sorry that everyone thinks he was misunderstood but just from the above FACTS alone...discounting all the horrible, very likely possibilities about him...think it was very lucky for him, that we didn't understand him. P.S. I've been saying for years he was was wearing a wig - and no one believed me about that either. This is because the obvious, is not obvious when one is talking about a CELEBRITY and not a mere mortal... Fed up with our ridiculous worship of celebrity. Is anyone out there actually with me on this?No - it isn't nasty to call a spade, a spade. The truth is brutal, and I'm telling the truth.Yes, yes - I do actually have real reasons to think as I do - we know of a family whose kid went to Neverland, plus I've done my research. I used to like MJ - until I had good reason not to. You know less than me - and yet look how YOU judge.I can understand why you're angry, but the family's son went to Neverland twice. First time he was elated by it. Second time he was traumatised - couldn't even control his bladder after that - standing in the living room peeing, all shook up. But I guess you all think that's perfectly normal. I give up. You love someone you've not met. You're ridiculous and a danger to your kids if you ever have any. more

Voting Question: can someone help me with this question? I don't seem to get the correct answer. I tried but no success thanx?

Harvest Fields is considering expanding its wine-making operations. The expansion will require new equipment costing $489,000 that would be depreciated on a straight-line basis to a zero balance over the 5-year life of the project. The estimated salvage value is $172,000. The project requires $41,000 initially for net working capital, all of which will be recouped at the end of the project. The projected operating cash flow is $201,500 a year. What is the net present value of this project if the relevant discount rate is 16 percent and the tax rate is 34 percent? $183,818.52 $203.339.15 $211,661.61 $231,182.24 $237,689.09 more

Voting Question: What’s the best website for finding NICE boutique-style gifts?

It seems like I have open houses or kid’s birthdays or colleagues’ events each week and it’s getting tough to come up with new and unique gifts for each! I don’t want to bring a bottle of wine or give the kid gift du jour every time. I’d rather give that present that everyone envies and wonders how I could have possibly found. Oh, and if I can get the little treasures at discount, that’s even better! My friends and I shop a lot of the same popular sites, so finding some best-kept-secret-type site would be fabulous! Any ideas?Just found TodaysGoodie.com and LOVE it!!! Such cute stuff. But keep the answers coming and let me know if you've bought from TodaysGoodie. The women that run it seem very friendly. Resolved Question: Any suggestions for Birthday party newsletter?

Hi everyone- OI'm planning a surprise 50th Bday party for my husband, and his sister made a wise suggestion (it will be a dinner cruise for three hours on a Sat nite, and we/I only plan to pay for his siblings and spouses, but discount tickets are available if aditional family want to come- but I don't want to pay for them). the sis suggested since the party is in October (he's Halloween baby, but we're doing it the week before) to send a newsletter out informing family and friend sof it so they can plan, as well I'd lie to aske for any photos they have of him or funny memories I can put in a scrapbook as a group gift.....can anyone thing of anything else thaqt could be pertinent in the newsletter? I've been thinking of maybe a small trivia contest and the winner wins a prize (bottle of wine or candy maybe), or what sort of favors- he has a favorite truffle he loves, so I was thinking of buying truffle boxes and given them as favor to guest (favor boxes of two)...any help is greatly appreicated and in our family, nothing is too far off kilter- he and I are funeral directors, and we were marreid on October fri the 13th, so mordie is okay, but we'll be sharing this cruise ship with another 100ish people.I must not have worded the questions differently-- I will be paing for ourselves, his siblings and spouses and a few coworkers (a total between 40-50 people) the only part I'm talking about is the younger family members so far removed, adn given most are married with very small children (age limit is minimum ge 16). I'm just wondering if I should put things in like directions, that if they decided to pruchase drinks itt a cash bar (there are several siblings, fathe in law, and other in laws that are recovering alcoholics) more

Resolved Question: Do they over discounts for limo service?

I am thinking about doing a week in napa valley area for a honeymoon. This is a backup option depending on exchange rates. I would like to do 4 days of wine tours (average 6hrs a piece) 7 dinners / some nights shows (3 hours average), airport transfers, and potentially if the hotel doesn't have a spa 2 drop off and pickups at spas. Do limo companies do bulk discounts? or give a special rate for an entire day or is it just xx per hour. The key is luxury not convenience. But if anyone offers a beter rate that would be great. more

Resolved Question: Budget shopping and supermarkets - do you think opinions have changed?

I can remember when both Primark and Aldi opened. 7 or 8 years ago Primark was somewhere you'd get underwear from or pyjamas, but nowadays they do fantastic quirky jewellery and clothing which is often heavily inspired by the stuff on the catwalks. Similarly, around the same time Aldi was a place that people didn't generally admit to shopping at. These days though their ranges are developing (their 'Speciality' ice cream is just like Haagen Das) and their wines, beers and spirits range is actually more extensive than my local Tesco. Plus, they're endorsed by This Morning chef Phil Vickery. Has your opinion changed of budget shopping and supermarkets? Do you shop at Primark or Aldi? Why do you think people are more positive about discount shopping now than they were 10 years ago? Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: How is this short poem?

Sitting idly on a swivel chair breathing to a backdrop of bubbling rice, spanish spices bewitching the night like city blocks beating life; sitting before all time not quite dead, drawing from the magnetic spring and electric winter's midnight bout. Contemplating a cigarette, cancer stick, counting on a motionless outdoors, manicured lawns dulling the stars and driving the crickets insane. Sitting on a swively and boring chair in a haze, stifling the bladder to write-- excitement before a numbing shot of putrid discount wine. Where's the time all gone, heart bubbling and evaporating and limbs sore and head pounding and the air without vitality-- agh, i'll tell you where the time has gone: under dead stars, and dissolved like blue moon smoke meandering into the unknown. And falling back on poisonous fags, spittooning sludge infused by drags, thinking backwards, eyes bleeding, blinking sideways and bored. more

Resolved Question: People think we're teen parents.?

Just wondering, how would you all deal with this? Me and my girlfriend are 25 and 26 years old. We have been together many years, and as athiests we have decided not to get married, unless maybe it is from a Shaman or something. We both just feel it is disrespectful for us to get married in a church. Anyway, we have a child together (newborn), and we both look very young for our age. I smoked up until about 6 months ago, and I would still get carded everywhere I went. In fact, people often thought my ID was fake when I was purchasing cigarettes or alcohol. Anyway, she has the exact same problem. If we go out to the wine bar together, we get carded every single time. People say we both look about 17 years old. So, I have a very good job, and she is basically a stay at home mom right now, but we are both educated and she also had a very good job. I dropped $1,200 for us to head to a very fancy resort in Sedona for Valentines weekend. I work in a very casual environment (programmer), and I do not have any dress slacks and shirts. We went to Macys tonight so I could get some shoes, slacks, and shirts. We walked around the store for a about 45 minutes without a single salesperson approaching us. After 45 minutes or so I asked a salesperson for some assistance finding black pants with no pinstripes. He then said "we are in a rather expensive section, follow me." I followed him and he took me to the area where pants are $20 on sale. I didn't say anything. After finally finding everything I needed I went to the checkout. The guy at checkout gave me a really great discount (which was awesome), because he had a kid at 17, and he knows what it is like to be a teen parent. When we go out with our kid we get really terrible looks, and I see people talking. We live in a upper-middle class white/republican area of Phoenix. It's really bothering me the way we're being treated. How would you all handle this? P.S.: We are both 1/2 Mexican as well, with me being a little darker. I have dealt with salespeople following me around stores until I was about 18, but that has been years. I do not think this is discrimination though. I really just think we're looked down upon, even though the fact is that we probably have a lot more financial stability than the salespeople at Macys.Tonight I was wearing a collared Calvin Klein dress shirt with a well-fitted pair of jeans. Now, I typically do not dress like this because I like to dress casual, and I'm not going to change that for anyone. I'm from Portland, OR where people are far more interested in who you are rather than what you have. Substance over style, that sort of thing. People still wear flannel up there, but the personalities and conversations are so much better than here. Anyway, I really hope it's not due to the fact that we're Mexicans, because I have never really felt that type of discrimination before. Then again, there's a lot more of that discrimination here in Phoenix than there was back in Portland, so it is a real possibility. Also, we were carded when we went to see the movie "The Strangers" at the mall. It was the "scary" movie with Liv Tyler... Rated R : )Hm, guess I will just have to upgrade my clothing, even though I just said I would never. I never have dressed in baggy pants, or Hollister, or anything. I often wear shirts with Ghandi quotes though, so I assume those will have to be lazing around the house clothes now. Thank you for all the answers everyone!Hm, guess I will just have to upgrade my clothing, even though I just said I would never. I never have dressed in baggy pants, or Hollister, or anything. I often wear shirts with Ghandi quotes though, so I assume those will have to be lazing around the house clothes now. Thank you for all the answers everyone! One final update, two pictures for reference. This is how I dress, the one with hat being more typical for me. Also, as you can see I don't really look that Mexican... <a href="http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=22790444co7.jpg" target="_blank">me1</a><br /> <a href="http://img264.imageshack.us/my.php?image=me2ve2.jpg" target="_blank">me2</a>didn't work, here goes... http://img264.imageshack.us/my.php?image=me2ve2.jpg AND, http://img11.imageshack.us/my.php?image=37867731oq8.jpgAlright, man this is last edit. I just want to say that I do NOT think any parent should be treated like this unless they are a terrible parent. I am not saying that I shouldn't be treated this way, but teen parents should. Listen, we all have our own situations and I respect that. I have a nephew who had a kid at 17, and he's the best father I've ever seen. My girlfriends cousin had a baby at 14 (wow), and she went on to graduate law school at UCLA. So no, I don't think anyone should be treated this way, and it's just sad that so many in our society are so quick to judge. more

Resolved Question: What is the best way to enjoy the Niagara Ice Wine Festival this January?

My boyfriend and I want to go to Niagara for the Ice Wine festivities either next weekend, the 17th and 18th, or the following weekend, the 24th and 25th. Being from London, we've been to Niagara but don't know the Niagara area too well. I was wondering if someone could please tell me what the best way was to get all we could out of the festival - and how to do it on a budget...? We were thinking of getting the Ice Wine Discovery Pass, which I see gets you a discounted rate at six of the areas....I think? What are the best areas to go to, and how can we get the most out of it without spending a ton of money? Also, if you could give us an idea of what its like, that would be great, too. We have never been, so we really don't know what to expect. If you could suggest a hotel, as well, that would be great, too. We would be looking for one that is inexpensive, but a nice stay, and close to as much of the festival activities as possible. Thanks, so much for your time - I'll be sure to award points for good answers. I've been on the websites and read all the information - there is just so much to chose from, so I guess I'm just hoping someone who has been there or who maybe even works there and can give me a good opinion on what to do, where to go, and what may not be as worth it to go, too. Oh, also, we can only make to to one of the weekends. Which weekend would be better for us? Thanks again, cheers!what are you confused about? yeah right, that was a cheap way to earn a couple points. thanks for wasting my time petey. more

Resolved Question: Net Present Value of Investment?

Harvest Fields is considering expanding its wine-making operations. The expansion will require new equipment costing $489,000 that would be depreciated on a straight-line basis to a zero balance over the 5-year life of the project. The estimated salvage value is $172,000. The project requires $41,000 initially for net working capital, all of which will be recouped at the end of the project. The projected operating cash flow is $201,500 a year. What is the net present value of this project if the relevant discount rate is 16 percent and the tax rate is 34 percent? I have problem with this because my answer does not match any given. for year 1 i subtract -489000 and -41000 for year 2 +201500 (OCF) +33252(tax saving on depreciation) for year 3 +201500 (OCF) +33252(tax saving on depreciation) for year 4 +201500 (OCF) +33252(tax saving on depreciation) for year 5 +201500 (OCF) +33252(tax saving on depreciation) +41000 (NWC return) + 113520 (salvage after tax) Can anyone help with this? because i have no ide what i do wrong.oh yes! year 1 is year 0 and there is one more year. i miscopied it from worksheet. my answer appears 312215.97 so it islike yours without rounding. given choices are: 183,818.52; 203,339.15; 211,661.61; 231,182.24; 237,289.09 more

Resolved Question: Is it illegal to sell alcohol below cost in New York state?

I work in a wine store in New York and a customer wanted to purchase a case of wine that was labeled at 5.99 plus a 10% discount. However, I was not allowed to do this because I was told that that would be selling below cost. Can they refuse to sell a case at the advertised price because it's below cost? Isn't that false advertising? more

Resolved Question: Do people suggest splitting the bill because they can't do math?

I've had a few dining "experiences" with splitting the bill among friends. I usually skip drinks because sodas cost $3, beers $6, wines/martinis $9 and that is a blatant rip-off. So some of the most dreaded words for me to hear are "Hey, let's split the bill." I always split the bill when I can but often times my friends and I will go out for food that is meant to be shared among everyone such as tapas or Asian food. Then there is the problem of people eating way more than their share but that is another problem... I looked through past questions on Y answers about splitting the bill and found certain trends. The questions I'm asking today are do you think people split the bill because they don't want to do math? Have you ever been one of those people? Do you think people do it because they know they can get a discount on their meal or their drinks? I bet that people who order less are the ones who are better at math so there is bound to be a clash when other people don't realize how much more they ate/drank/ordered.Oops. Obviously "can't do math" and "don't feel like or don't want to do math" aren't interchangeable. Someone did say that sometimes they are too drunk to do math after a meal... more

Resolved Question: What do you think about the G20 Summit for 2008?

The leaders of the 20 so-called largest powers of the world gathered together to discuss a number of matters of international concern, most notably the current financial crisis that seems to be a problem all over the world. A number of reported facts struck me as ironic. In the first place, the Summit, which was to be representative of the entire world, contained the leaders of only 20 nations, as if the other nations, numbering far larger than 20, make no diffference at all. The leaders met behind closed doors rather than in the open to discuss matters that were supposed to be affecting the entire population of the world, which could be considered as the general public. The leaders deplored a state of lawlessness where matters of world trade are concerned, when, in fact, the whole system of barter, as it is practised, probably is already bound by an overwhelming set of stringent of rules too numerous to not present contradictions. They felt that more acknowledgement of countries outside the Western powers was necesssary, when all countries seem to barter under the same sytem. In fact, they probably sought to solve the problem of barter - which is not even exchange as it is practised - through the process of barter itself. Does it make sense? The leaders discussed the role of too much credit in the financial crisis, and pondered about the world financial crisis itself while drinking $500 per bottle wine, which allegedly can be as cheap as $400 per bottle on discount. I was listening half indifferently to the news accounts of this Summit until a commercial broke the monotony. It was a commercial for ING financial institution, bragging about how easy it is for someone to obtain credit from this company. Do you find this gathering of leaders to be a hypocritical deflection from what realistically has to happen? more

Voting Question: What is a 'fair' share price of Majestic Wine plc (UK wine retailer)?

I need to use a dividend discount model to estimate a 'fair' price of Majestic Wine. In order to do this I need to calculate the required return which is : the risk free rate (4.11 %) + Beta (0.147)*equity risk premium. I do not know how to calculate equity risk premium...  more

Resolved Question: Can you typically buy wine in bulk at the liquor store?

Like by the case or something? Will it be a better value (like will they typically give you a little discount or something)? I love this wine (this is the only picture I could find online): http://www.hopsandgrapesonline.com/images/uploads/25576.jpeg It's not expensive, but I really do love it, so I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to purchase a case instead of a bottle at a time.  more

Resolved Question: Too many fights and fiancee has "checked out"?

The gist is that my fiancee and I have been fighting a lot since our engagement in June. The fights have escalated to weird degrees and he says I'm too emotional and reactionary. On hindsight, I realize that I contributed to these fights and here are some of the reasons we argue: * He moved in to my house a year ago and I'm afraid I may have acted like I could call some shots since I owned the place (like asking him to take out the trash and/or walk our dog). He often put stakes in the ground and refused to do things I asked. * My mother was in a car accident 2 months ago and is still in the hospital. The time I've spent visiting he has weighed on me and he hasn't been able to visit the hospital much because it reminds him of his parent who was sick a lot and passed away. I've resented the fact that he couldn't always be with me when I visited my mom...and could have been more understanding. * My fiance doesn't always manage his money well enough to contribute to the bills on time each month. I may have used this as an excuse for me to belittle him sometimes. On hindsight, I think I adopted the position of being the "responsible" one and acted like he was the "irresponsible one". He had a hard time engaging in the monthly budget exercise and bills paying. To fix this and since I make more, we discounted his share since he couldn't afford to pay as much and we just started on a good plan this month. * I've not been very open to his request that I wear sexier clothes more often. Instead of thinking he didn't love me as me, I should have just listened to his needs and figured out ways to keep my own identity and meet his needs at the same time. * I've gotten upset with him for seeking satisfaction through what I've identified as inappropriate relationships with women via his dating podcast (which he stopped), hobby of photographing aspiring fashion models, twitter, facebook, and myspace. We've had many many arguements over this. He admitted that his first wife was demanding and he may have been more flirtatious than he should be as an engaged man. He he has worked to modify his actions some to ensure that his interactions are appropriate. * After a long day at work, I usually pour myself a glass or two of wine and retreat into my online course while he retreats into his flickr and social media. We don't set aside enough time for us.. Anyway, two weeks ago, we were supposed to put the second deposit on the wedding location. He postponed the date without discussion. We both agreed to go to counseling and I've been reading books on communication and managing my stress and reactionary behavior. I also went out and purchased 2 dresses and some skirts. I thought we were making small strides to work through our issues together. I will admit that I was snippy at times because he made the decision to postpone the wedding date without discussing it with me. I was also a bit sick to my stomach because we lost our initial deposit. A week ago, we had a horrible fight and he packed up a ton of stuff in his car and left. He said he needed some “space.” Anyway, he has been gone for almost a week, has shut down, and still won’t talk to me on the phone. Each day is draining me and making me feel neglected. He's emailed me about logistical things...but when I call him back to chat, he doesn't have time to talk to me and tells me that I have to wait for him to come back to me. Also, my birthday is in 2 days and we were supposed to do something. He said that he still wanted to do something for my birthday..but I haven't heard anything else about it from him. The whole thing is depressing! I've really tried to give him his space. One relationship site I found advised that I email him loving emails that let him know I still love him...but don't require anything from him until he can come out of his shell. I've sent small emails that say, "I hope you have a good day" and "I miss you." A few days ago, he responded to one email and wrote "I miss and love you." That sounds like he's trying to process everything in his head. However, I'm still in the dark about what is going on. None of my girlfriends have ever experienced this type of thing before and I’m trying to get some perspective. I want this to work and I love him...., my biggest challenge is feeling neglected and alone on my birthday while my mom is still in the hospital. I need a shoulder and he's not available. What should I do? OMG! Thanks for all the replies. Especially considering my long....long question. In answer to some questions...I'm 44 years old, he's 39 and we've been together 2 years. We've lived together for 1 year. I did not anticipate these issues before we moved in together. Once we were living together, I was trying to keep the house going, help him feel loved, and also get what I needed (including money for the bills and help with the chores). I guess I shouldn't have taken on all the responsibility in the relationship (-: I really appreciate everyone's responses. Writing this question and reading through everyone's responses will help me process through this and determine my next steps. My friends and family have already made many plans for my birthday...and, I have many hobbies and outside interests to keep me busy. Thanks again everyone! more

Resolved Question: How do winemakers determine what to charge for wine?

My husband and I love a good bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. We find some pretty decent prices at Safeway and an Outlet store. It makes me wonder how the winemakers decide what to charge for their wine and how do outlet stores determine how much to discount the original price when they put the bottles in THEIR store? This is a loaded question I know but maybe someone knows? No smart aleck remarks please. more

Voting Question: Looking for lip gloss brand with intense color but not sticky?

I like lipgloss that comes with a wand, but I'd like a brand that has intense reds, wines, or purples. I'm not looking for pale pink, peach, mauve, etc. I'd like something that is not sticky. Preferably it won't be perfumed or have a taste. If the brand is available at a drug or discount store versus a department store that would be great as I don't want to spend a ton. I'm looking for lip glosses available in the US. Thanks in advance for your help. :) more

Resolved Question: Buy Woodbridge Wine Get Discounted Beer?

At the grocery store the other day I noticed that Woodbridge is offering a $5 mail in rebate on any purchase of beer provided that you purchase two 750ml bottles of their wine or a single 1.5 liter bottle. I thought it was pretty cool but it raised some questions... Is Woodbridge affiliated with any brewery? Do the makers of Woodbridge openly advocate beer? Is this simply a "chicks and dudes" deal? Any other thoughts or comments are welcome. It was just a generic rebate on any purchase of beer but that does shed some light on the situation. more
