Open Question: Wine themed cupcakes for bridal shower?

My sister is getting married and LOVES wine. We are throwing her a bridal shower with a wine theme. I am making red wine cupcakes for the shower. I was wondering if anyone had any great decrating tips? I would like to decorate them with grapevines. I am having some trouble finding products that will help me out. I am trying to avoid just piping the grape vines on. Any ideas would be very helpful. Thanks for sharing your creativity! more

Open Question: Will turbo yeast make wine if I add it to grape juice?

The yeast is from Mile Hi Distilling. I got a one gallon jug of 100% grape juice from wal-mart and it is value time. I added more sugar too it so it would be stronger alcohol. Then I put the yeast in a small glass of hot sink water with a little bit of sugar and stirred it up. Then I added that mixture to the jug of juice, but nothing has happened yet. There is no fermentation. Is this yeast only meant for making a distilling mash? It is frustrating. I added some bakers yeast after that, but nothing is happening still. more

Resolved Question: How many of you take the time to grow and cultivate and harvest the foods you eat?

What about the wild animals, do you leave some of the produce behind for them to gleen? I ask because that is a Big part of my life, on 1 acre of land I have planted and cultivate a pear, 2 apple, 1 plum and 1 apricot tree. I have a butternut tree (white walnut), blueberry bushes, a large grape arbor with table and wine grapes growing on it and I grow a large vegetable garden from May through October. This is my way of keeping a small carbon footprint on the earth. I was just wondering, since vegetarian/vegans are so concerned with the well being of life are they as concerned with taking the steps to personally care for their own in a self sustaining manner. This is not a critical question so PLEASE don't get offended. Not meaning to boast but my son also makes maple syrup from our 3 tree's (enough for ourselves and close friends and family) and I raise my own beautiful free range hens. I do leave plenty of vegetation for the woodland animals and take great pleasure in watching them eat, but only after I have harvested. It's not nearly as fun to see a gopher eating the butternut squash before I've had a chance to taste it. Everything I grow is organic, I would never use insecticides or pesticides on my land. Garden bugs are fed to the hens and lady bug and praying mantises take care of my fruit trees.Grandma, I hear you. I don't have nearly the number of wild animals you have and only the hens are allowed in the garden after harvest. The wild animals help themselves to fruits and nuts that fall from the tree.Smedrik, I have a mulberry tree also, it makes great wine! more

Voting Question: How much is a bottle of Le XV PRESIDENT du 1991 worth?

I have a bottle of this wine which I bought as a case in 1991 and have two bottles left. I was wondering their worth. The wine was from the Cotes Du Roussillon Villages and is a 15% strength wine which is unusual. It was called the "Triple Crown" because they had three vintage grape years in a row which does not happen that often. Although I like a nice wine to drink, I am not an expert though this is the finest wine I have ever tasted. Thanks, Joe more

Resolved Question: Is modern Israel a fulfillment of prophecy?

Isaiah 41:12-14 "Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you." Amos 9:11, 13 "I will restore David's fallen tent. I will repair its broken places, restore its ruins, and build it as it used to be,'' … "The days are coming," declares the Lord, "when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills." Isaiah 41:18-20 “I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs. I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set pines in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together, so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.” Isaiah 51:3 “The Lord will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.” Isaiah 43:5-6 "Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. Resolved Question: Mainly for Catholics: Two questions about communion?

Canon law stipulates that for communion only grape wine and nothing else can be used for the wine, and for the bread only bread made of wheat flour and water and nothing else can be used, or it's not valid. But--do these other practices render communion invalid? 1) At mass, the priest adds a little water to the wine. At that point it is no longer just grape wine. Is it then invalid? 2) Although it's not as common as it used to be, some people prefer the priest to dip the host in the wine and place it on their tongue. Since the host is then no longer just wheat flour and water, but now has wine added to it, is it now invalid?Of course you're going to say valid, I guess I should have asked how can it be valid when the rubrics changes the conditions required for it to be valid? more

Resolved Question: Homemade Wine... I have no balloons... read the details, please...?

I decided to try my hand at making wine... here's the problem: I have already mixed the water, sugar, and grape concentrate into a gallon container, and I know that I'm on the right track. I have already bought the yeast, and as I was about to prepare it, I suddenly realized that I have no balloons. The recipe said that I should cut a few small holes in a balloon and push it down into the bottle, you know, to gage the fermentation process... then, when the balloon deflates, the wine will be ready... I'm sure you guys know about that... Anyway, I have no choice but to leave this sugar-water-juice concoction sit until I can go out and pick up the balloons, but will that mess up the taste of the wine? I don't think it would, but I'm new at this... Do I even need the balloons at all? Are there any alternatives? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: showing communion in a public school?

For our sociology class we had religions to research and for my group got Protestant. We have to do an activity for our presentation. Buddhism is doing meditation, hinduism brought in food. For our activity our group wanted to "show" communion. Like, bring in bread and grape juice (representing wine) and explain bread is the body of christ, and the wine is his blood then go fourth saying this is what most christians do for communion. We would offer it to whoever wants it. When i explained this to my parents (who are strong in their belief) they got offended saying that's almost "sacrilegious" and that we shouldnt "act" out communion. They said that with communion comes a lot of prayer and cleansing of the body and if our class takes bread without prayer it would be like mocking it. I would like an opinion on this, and if you agree with my parents, another way of doing so or another activity all together. Thank you :) more

Voting Question: Is this an allergy to fruit?

When I eat grapes, starfruit, kiwi or pineapple my mouth, cheeks and tongue swell up, and feel raw. It doesn't happen when I eat other citrus fruit like strawberries, oranges, or grapefruit. I'm not allergic to latex (someone said it might be related), and my worst "attack" was with organic grapes (so it's not pesticides). Someone even suggested I try to peel the skin off the grape...which didn't help. It's not bad enough to block my airway or, I hate to say, cause me to stay away from these fruits all together...but I do try to avoid eating them whenever possible. Oh, and I'm not allergic to red wine. So is this an allergic reaction? If so, to what (not citric acid or pesticides)? And is there anything I should avoid that might cause an even worse "attack"? If it's not an allergic reaction...what is it? more

Resolved Question: Vegan Recipe Help Request?

I am planning to make a vegan cheezecake for a vegan wine and cheeze party tonight, however, the cheezecake that I liked the sound of uses tofu in the recipe and I would like to use Tofutti cream cheese and vegan sour cream instead to avoid that "tofu taste" in the end product. I have looked at other plain vegan recipes, but I am still not sure what amounts I should use in subbing out the tofu. Here is the recipe: Bryanna's Vegan "Buttered" Rum Cheezecake INGREDIENTS * Crumb Crust o 2 cups dried or toasted breadcrumbs o 6 tablespoons brown sugar o 4 tablespoons melted Earth Balance * Filling o 2 x 12.3 ounce boxes of extra-firm SILKEN tofu o 3/4 cup raw brazil nuts, ground finely in a food processor, mini-chopper or coffee/spice mill o 3/4 cups vegan sugar o 6 tablespoons rum OR 1 tablespoon rum extract plus 5 tablespoons white grape juice or apple juice o 3 tablespoons lemon juice o 2 tablespoons cornstarch o 1/2 teaspoon salt * Butterscotch Sauce o 1/3 cup corn syrup (you can buy organic now) or brown rice syrup o 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons brown sugar o 2 tablespoons Earth Balance o 1/8 teaspoon salt o 1/3 cup rich soymilk (such as Vitasoy or Soy dream) or Silk organic soy creamer o 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract * Toppings o 1/2 cup raisins plumped in 2 tablespoons rum OR in 1 teaspoon rum extract plus 2 tablespoons white grape juice or apple juice o 1 cup toasted pecan halves o 2 ripe broiled bananas (peel, cut in half lengthwise, sprinkle with brown sugar and broil until sugar is bubbly) (optional) METHOD Preheat the oven to 325F. Mix the breadcrumbs with the brown sugar and melted Earth Balance and press onto the bottom of a lightly-oiled 10" round cake pan or 9" spring-form pan. Bake 5 minutes and remove from oven. Place the filling ingredients (make sure that the Brazil nuts are ground as directed) in a food processor or blender and blend until VERY smooth (be patient). Pour into the crust. Bake 60 minutes, or until the filling is set and slightly cracked around the edges. Cool on a rack, then refrigerate for about four hours before serving. To make the sauce, bring the syrup, brown sugar, Earth Balance, and salt to a boil in a heavy saucepan and boil over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the consistency of heavy syrup. Remove from heat and cool a bit. Heat the soymilk or creamer just until warm. Whisk into the syrup along with vanilla. Add the plumped raisins to the sauce. To serve, top each serving of cheezecake with some of the sauce and sprinkle with toasted pecans. If you like, top the cake with the broiled bananas, cut into slices, before topping with the sauce. NOTES Makes one 9-10 inch cheezecake Any help in subbing out the tofu with Toffuti and maybe vegan sour cream in the right amounts would be very much appreciated. Thanks!!Please note that I am a intermediate home vegan baker and cook. With that in mind, I realize that tofu does take on its surrounding flavors very well, but in some cases, especially in deserts, there can be a soy or tofu aftertaste. This is what I am trying to avoid here. If you have a nut/rum Tofutti based cheezecake recipe, that would be very helpful. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Does Cell Phone Radiation Combat Alzheimer's?

That's what Fox News asks in the following article: http://www.myfoxnepa.com/dpps/health/dpgo-cell-phone-radiation-combats-alzheimers-lwf-20100107_5461689 Why wouldn't you be alarmed that radiation from cell phone use two hours a day has measurable affects your mind? This is pure spin. The genius spin-mister-marketing cell phone folks got Fox to report that radiation equivalent to two hours of cell phone use may reverse Alzeimer's disease in laboratory mice. It also ducks questions about what the true cause of Alzeimer's disease is. That's pure genius and it's not what the scientists got out of the study. That's almost as good as talking about red wine health benefits when people get more benefit from tannins consumed by eating grapes directly. Why is the media ignoring links betweem Alzeimer's disease and consumption of animal proteins, statin drugs, aspartame, MSG, excitotoxins, and other substances common in the Western diet? The article also fails to mention how memory impairment was created in the mice. You may be eating that right now. Don't trust the FDA to protect your health. more

Resolved Question: Onions, Grapes, and dogs...?

This question is about an answer to "Why can't you give onions and grapes to a dog?" about 4 months ago. This one answer got a 'thumbs down'. Why? If you already know which of these foods listed are truly bad for a dog, will you please save me hours and hours of research trying to check which are true? I don't want to make my dog sick, but I don't want to spend my whole life researching every toxic thing on the planet instead of spending time with my family (dog included). If you are SURE you know, please tell me which on the list are incorrect? Please don't guess, as that is not helpful at all. Thanks very much, in advance, for your time and expertise! : ) Here's the answer that got no thumbs-up and one thumbs-down: 1. Onions (Both onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient Thiosulphate. But onions are more of a danger. Many dog biscuits contain *small* amounts of garlic – garlic contains less of this toxin so huge amounts would need to be consumed to be toxic. And, by the way, this poison builds up the system – it can be toxic in one large dose – or with repeated consumption of small amounts.) 2. Chocolate (Chocolate contains Theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. This can be fatal to dogs.) 3. Grapes (Grapes are dangerous because of an unknown substance which is toxic to dogs – affects canine’s kidneys) 4. Raisins (See above.) 5. Most Fruit Pits and Seeds (Contain Cyanogenic Glycosides resulting in cyanide poisoning – though the fruit itself is OK.) 6. Macadamia Nuts (Macadamia nuts contain an unknown substance that is toxic to dogs.) 7. Bones (Most bones should *not* be given (especially chicken bones) because they can splinter and cause laceration of the digestive system and/or become lodged in your pet’s throat – so they also pose a choking hazard.) Raw bones are generally fine, but Chicken wings poze a choking hazard to large dogs. 8. Potato Peelings and Green Potatoes (Contain Oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.) 9. Rhubarb leaves (See above.) 10.
